Mairead Durkin
Biography
Personal: Durkin was chosen as one of the 11 players in the Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse College Draft.
2023 Season: Durkin majored in interactive design at James Madison and also earned a certificate in cyber intelligence. Her parents are Shane and Anne Durkin. Her father played Gaelic football in Ireland for County Sligo and the Irish National College Team. Her mother was a Hall of Fame cross country student-athlete at North Rockland High School. Both of her siblings are James Madison graduates.
At James Madison: Durkin played for James Madison for five years and earned a letter each year. She started in 64 out of 75 games for the Dukes from 2019 to 2023. Throughout her career, she scored nine goals and set a James Madison record with 135 caused turnovers. She also registered 120 ground balls and 56 draw controls. In the 2022 season, Durkin achieved the school's single-season record with 52 caused turnovers. She was recognized as a First-Team IWLCA All-America performer in 2023 and received All-America honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine. She also received First-Team IWLCA All-South Region distinction in 2022 and 2023. Durkin was nominated for the 2023 Tewaaraton Award and received All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse. In 2023, she was named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and received First-Team All-AAC honors. As a senior, Durkin was named the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year and was selected to the All-CAA First Team. In 2022, she received the Defensive Player of the Year and First-Team All-State commendations from the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association. In 2021, as a redshirt sophomore, she was a Second-Team All-CAA and All-State pick. Durkin started all 17 games during that season. In the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign, she started all six games. As a freshman, she played in 11 games and scored four goals.
