Recap: Team Lorenz Rallies for 5-4 Victory in Extra Innings

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Middle infielder Hannah Flippen scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning as Team Lorenz rallied to claim a 5-4 victory over Team Ocasio to complete Saturday’s Athletes Unlimited Pro Softball doubleheader at Parkway Bank Sports Complex

The win allowed Team Lorenz to remain undefeated at 2-0, while Team Ocasio saw its record fall to 1-1.

Middle infielder Erin Coffel earned MVP 1 honors and a season-high 210 leaderboard points after going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the fifth inning.

Corner infielder Jessi Warren followed with MVP 2 distinction after authoring a 3-for-3 performance with three doubles, giving the former Florida State product 200 leaderboard points.

Pitcher Rachel Garcia (2-3) earned the win in the circle after throwing 3.0 innings of no-hit relief with two strikeouts.

Corner infielder Delanie Wisz drove in all four runs for Team Ocasio in the loss to collect MVP 3 accolades. Wisz hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning to give Team Ocasio a 3-0 lead before adding an RBI single in the top of the third inning.

Odicci Alexander (0-3) suffered the loss in relief after giving up the game-winning run. The 2023 AU Pro Softball Championship Season titleist did not allow a hit in 1.1 innings and registered a strikeout.

KEY MOMENT

Team Lorenz overcame a 4-2 deficit by scoring the game’s final three runs. Coffel evened the score at 4-all when she blasted her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field in the fifth inning. After Team Ocasio left two runners on base in the top of the eighth inning, Team Lorenz secured the victory when Flippen scored on a wild pitch by Alexander.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

The victory will allow outfielder Amanda Lorenz to enter Sunday’s season finale doubleheader with a 210-point lead over pitcher Aleshia Ocasio. Coffel, meanwhile, surged five spots up the leaderboard into sixth place after her season-high 210-point performance.

GAME NOTES

  • Teams are now 5-for-31 in captain’s challenges through 28 games after Team Lorenz and Team Ocasio combined for three challenges in Saturday’s finale.

  • Team Lorenz initiated a captain’s challenge on a safe call during a stolen base attempt by catcher Gwen Svekis with two outs in the top of the third inning … The challenge was successful after the call was reversed and Svekis was called out.

  • Team Lorenz also requested a captain’s challenge in the bottom of the third inning when outfielder Victoria Hayward was called out trying to score on a single by middle infielder Hannah Flippen … The challenge was unsuccessful as the call was upheld.

  • Team Ocasio asked for a captain’s challenge in the bottom of the fifth inning after Lorenz was ruled safe on an infield single … The challenge was unsuccessful as the call was upheld.

  • Team Ocasio and Team Lorenz played in the fourth extra-inning game of the season … It also marked the ninth extra-inning affair in AU Pro Softball Championship Season history.

  • Team Lorenz became the second team to win in walk-off fashion this season … Team Palacios defeated Team Faraimo by a 3-2 count on August 17 after a single by outfielder Morgan Zerkle in the eighth inning.

  • Warren equaled the Athletes Unlimited Pro Softball Championship Season single-game record with her three doubles against Team Ocasio on Saturday … Corner infielder Tori Vidales established the mark with three doubles against Team Warren on September 28, 2020.

  • Lorenz has hit safely in six of her last eight games after reaching on an infield single in the fifth inning.

  • Lorenz has also tallied 100 or more leaderboard points in seven of her last eight outings, including the last six in a row after collecting 110 points in Saturday’s victory.
