Madi Bugg
Biography
Personal: Bugg studied political science at Stanford and is participating in the Harvard Crossover into Business program in the fall of 2024. She is the daughter of Robin and Dick Bugg. Her mother, Robin, was a middle blocker at the University of Tennessee, where she earned three all-conference honors and was inducted into the Tennessee Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004. Madi was inducted into Cardinal Gibbons High School’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023. She has a younger brother, Logan, and a younger sister, Avery. Bugg was also an accomplished athlete in multiple sports, including soccer, baseball, basketball, and swimming during her youth. Outside of sports, she enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time outdoors. Additionally, she served as a stunt double in a volleyball documentary made in China.
Other Professional Experience: Bugg has been playing professional volleyball overseas since 2016. In the 2023-24 season, she won the Champion’s League, the Italian League, the Italian Cup, and the SuperCup with Prosecco Doc Imoco Volley Conegliano in Italy’s Serie A1. She has also played for several other teams, including ASPTT Mulhouse for two seasons, and one season each with Viteos Nuc, Dresdner SC, Allianz MTV Stuttgart, Roma Volleyball Club, and MOYA Radomka Lotnisko Warszawa-Radom.
At Stanford: Bugg was a four-year starter at Stanford University from 2012 to 2015. She ranks second in Stanford’s all-time records with 5,014 assists and eighth in school history with 121 career service aces. She completed her college career with 1,141 digs and was a three-time All-America selection. She was also named Pac-12 Conference Setter of the Year three times and contributed 317 kills and 267 total blocks. During her time at Stanford, she guided the team to 113 victories and four NCAA Tournament berths, including a national semifinal appearance in her junior year. In her senior season in 2015, she appeared in 30 matches and earned Third-Team AVCA All-America and Second-Team Volleyball Magazine All-America honors. She was also named to the AVCA All-Pacific North Region team and received Pac-12 Setter of the Year and All-Pac-12 honors. Bugg averaged a conference-high 11.05 assists per set, while also contributing 83 kills, 83 total blocks, and 28 service aces. She closed the season with 12 double-doubles and set a season high with 60 assists in a match against UCLA. She also matched her career high of six total blocks twice during the 2015 season and surpassed 30 assists in 26 out of 30 matches, including five matches with 50 or more assists. As a junior, Bugg appeared in 123 sets over 34 matches, earning First-Team AVCA All-America and Third-Team Volleyball Magazine All-America honors. She led NCAA Division I with an average of 12.10 assists per set, finishing the season with 1,488 assists, 104 kills, and 50 total blocks. She also landed 24 service aces and had a .333 hitting percentage. Bugg recorded 15 double-doubles and achieved a career-high seven kills twice during the season as Stanford reached the NCAA semifinals. She tallied at least 30 assists in 15 matches and had three matches with 50 or more assists. During the 2013 season, she played in all 112 sets across 32 matches. She earned Second-Team AVCA All-America honors and was named to the All-Pacific North Region team. Bugg also received Pac-12 Setter of the Year honors for the first time and was named to the NCAA Lexington Regional All-Tournament Team. She tallied 980 assists and ranked seventh in the country with an average of 11.88 assists per set. In addition to her assists, she contributed 66 kills, 274 digs, and 50 total blocks, setting a career-high 61 assists in a match against USC. She ranked fourth in the conference with 2.30 digs per set. As a freshman, Bugg was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team after earning a starting spot in 25 matches. She received one Pac-12 Freshman of the Week award and ranked in the top 10 in the league with an average of 8.17 assists per set, while also contributing 12 double-doubles in her rookie season.
