Emily Sterling
Biography
Personal: Sterling is the daughter of Mark and Patti Sterling and has one younger sister named Madison. She majored in public health science and received her masters in healthcare management from Maryland.
2024 Season: Sterling was one of 16 players selected in the Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse College Draft.
At Maryland: Sterling was a five-year letter winner at Maryland and earned a starting assignment in 79-of-82 games from 2020-24. She was a four-year starter for Coach Cathy Reese and finished her college career with a 9.74 goals against average and a .476 save percentage. She stands fourth in program history with 670 career saves and also collected 110 ground balls with 22 caused turnovers. Sterling garnered IWLCA Division I Goalkeeper of the Year and Honda Award Finalist plaudits during her junior season. She was a Third-Team IWLCA All-America selection in her final season with the Terrapins and was a three-time All-Big Ten Conference selection, earning First-Team notice as a junior and senior and receiving Second-Team All-Big Ten honors as a graduate student. Sterling was named 2022 and 2023 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year and was a member of the 2024 USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America Third Team while also receiving Honorable Mention All-America status from Inside Lacrosse. She was named Maryland Student-Athlete of the Year and was awarded the 2024 Big Ten Medal of Honor. As a graduate student, Sterling authored a 9.08 goals against average and a .516 save percentage while starting 19 games. She notched a season-high 14 saves in a victory over James Madison and also tallied 13 saves against Penn and at Johns Hopkins. Sterling was a starter in all 22 games as a senior and ranked sixth in NCAA Division I with 186 saves. She ended the 2023 campaign with a 9.60 goals against average while stopping 47.4 percent of the shots she faced. She tallied a season-best 15 saves against Georgetown and Princeton and also added 13 saves at Northwestern. Sterling led NCAA Division I with a 7.87 goals against average during her junior campaign and also ranked second in the nation with a .531 save percentage. She registered 10 or more saves in seven outings, including a career-high 16 stops against Northwestern on April 22, 2022. As a sophomore, Sterling was a starter in 16-of-17 contests and ranked second on the team with 36 ground balls while totaling 129 saves over 943 minutes. She opened her college career by appearing in three games during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, making 13 saves over 114 minutes.
