Recap: Team Thompson secures close victory against Team Hentz

OMAHA, Nebraska — Opposite Jordan Thompson utilized a match-high 19 kills to pilot Team Thompson to a narrow 71-70 victory over Team Hentz to close out the AU Pro Volleyball Championship doubleheader at Liberty First Credit Union Arena on Sunday night.

KEY MOMENT

Team Hentz took the first set by a 25-19 count before Team Thompson edged out the second frame, 27-25. Team Thompson took the match lead late in the third set and held on for a 71-70 victory.

LEADERBOARD UPDATE

Thompson remains atop the leaderboard entering Monday’s Week Two finale with 1,802 points, while setter Natalia Valentin-Anderson sits in second place with 1,283 points. Outside hitter Reagan Cooper remains in the third position with 1,231 points, while libero Morgan Hentz dipped to fourth place with 1,132 points.

TEAM HENTZ NOTES

Libero Morgan Hentz captained her teams to eight consecutive set victories dating back to Week One before Team Thompson claimed the middle frame with a 27-25 verdict.
Hentz’s streak of five consecutive victories as a team captain was also halted with Sunday’s setback.
Outside hitter Reagan Cooper, who earned MVP 1 honors for the third time this season, has posted three consecutive double-digit kill efforts, including back-to-back outings with 15 or more kills … She earned 231 leaderboard points after smashing a team-best 18 kills with four digs and one service ace.
Hentz tallied a team-high 11 digs in Sunday’s loss, marking her 48th career match with 10 or more digs … She has also tallied at least 10 digs in each of her last 19 matches.
Outside hitter Dani Drews contributed 14 kills in the loss on Sunday, marking her 30th career double-digit kill performance … She joins outside hitters Bethania De La Cruz-Mejía and Leah Edmond as the only players in league history with 30 or more double-digit kill efforts in their career.
Drews also added 10 digs to author her 14th career double-double, including her third double-double this season … Her 14 career double-doubles are tied for fourth place on the league’s all-time ledger.
Setter Chompoo Guedpard has dished out 30 or more assists in three of her last four matches after contributing 31 assists in Sunday’s match against Team Thompson.
Coach Joe Trinsey was on the bench for his 50th career AU Pro Volleyball Championship match on Sunday night … He holds the league’s all-time record with 30 victories as a coach.

Team Thompson’s victory marked the seventh match in league history to be decided by just one point, including the second instance this season … Team De La Cruz-Mejía held off Team Abercrombie, 69-68, in the final match of Week One.
Team Thompson registered a league season-high 12 blocks in Sunday’s victory, besting the previous mark of 11 rejections … Team Abercrombie had 11 blocks against Team De La Cruz-Mejía on October 6, while Team Valentin-Anderson posted 11 blocks in Sunday’s first match against Team Hoffman.
Opposite Jordan Thompson, who upped her record to 2-0 as a captain this season, recorded her fifth consecutive double-digit kill performance with a match-high 19 kills on Sunday night … She enters Monday’s Week Two finale as the league leader with 97 kills in five matches, including 45 kills in two outings this week.

Setter Madi Bugg finished with a match-high 34 assists, marking her sixth career match with 30 or more assists … She narrowly missed a double-double after adding nine digs in the victory.
Outside hitter Natália Zilio Pereira fashioned a season-high 12 digs, besting her previous mark of 10 digs against Team Abercrombie on October 5.
