Recap: Team North Uses Team Effort to Secure 11-8 Victory Over Team Apuzzo

SPARKS, Md. — Attacker Charlotte North usually garners the headlines whenever she is on the field, but in her debut as an Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse captain, it was her teammates who provided the lead stories.

Goalkeeper Caylee Waters notched 13 saves, including seven in the second half, and attacker Livy Rosenzweig collected a season-high 12 draw controls as Team North presented its captain with an 11-8 victory over Team Apuzzo to close Thursday’s doubleheader at USA Lacrosse Headquarters.

Waters, who received MVP 1 distinction for her efforts, tallied 182 leaderboard points after holding Team Apuzzo to just three goals in the first half.

Rosenzweig followed with an MVP 2 award after finishing just one draw control shy of matching her own AU Pro Lacrosse single-game record while adding two goals with an assist. The former Loyola Maryland standout authored a career-high 199 leaderboard points in the victory, rising to eighth place in the league standings.

Midfielder Amy Moreau completed the Game MVP sweep for Team North with two goals in addition to an assist, claiming MVP 3 accolades and 158 leaderboard points.

North chipped in three goals in the victory while attacker Kenzie Kent and midfielder Ellie Masera each scored twice.

Attacker Sam Apuzzo matched North for game-high honors after posting three goals with an assist, while midfielder Cassidy Weeks and attacker Maggi Hall tallied two goals apiece. Goalkeeper Kady Glynn tallied eight saves in the loss for Team Apuzzo, which outshot Team North by a 34-26 count.

KEY MOMENT

Team North broke a 3-all deadlock by rattling off three consecutive goals, including a pair of North markers, to claim a 6-3 advantage with 2:13 remaining in the first half. Team Apuzzo trimmed the deficit to 10-8 with 3:41 left in regulation on an Apuzzo goal, but midfielder Amy Moreau sealed the victory by scoring an unassisted marker with 1:19 remaining.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Apuzzo remains the league leader with 1,019 leaderboard points despite the loss, while North holds fourth place. In addition to Rosenzweig’s move up the leaderboard, Masera vaulted into ninth place after her 123-point performance.

GAME NOTES

  • Captains hold a 9-12 all-time record in their AU Pro Lacrosse debut after North earned her first win as a team leader against Team Apuzzo on Thursday.

  • Apuzzo saw an end to her four-game win streak as a captain with Thursday’s setback, dropping her all-time captain’s record to 23-8.

  • Apuzzo registered her 35th career multi-goal game in Thursday’s contest against Team North, extending her own league record … She also increased her point-scoring streak to 46 games in a row, remaining the only player in league history with a point in every career outing.

  • Apuzzo registered a career-high four caused turnovers in Thursday’s nightcap … It is the third time a player has notched four caused turnovers in a game this season.

  • Apuzzo and North each registered a hat trick to remain at the top of the league’s career leaders … Apuzzo owns the top spot on the ledger with 20 career hat tricks, while North follows with 19 career hat tricks.

  • Weeks has scored a goal in 5-of-7 games this season after netting a marker in the second quarter … She also registered her third multi-goal output of the season.

  • Masera authored her sixth multi-goal performance of the campaign, including her third in a row, after pocketing a pair of tallies in the first half.

  • North ran her goal-scoring streak to 17 straight games dating back to last season after netting a goal with 3:09 remaining in the second quarter … The last time North was held without a goal came on July 22, 2023, against Team Moreno.

  • North also notched multiple goals for the 25th time in her 31-game Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse career, the second-highest total in league history.

  • North secured her sixth hat trick in seven games this season, which are tied for the third-highest total in a single season in league history … She has posted six or more hat tricks in each of her three AU Pro Lacrosse seasons.

  • Hall has multiple goals in 5-of-7 games this season, including the last three in a row, after scoring a pair of markers against Team North on Thursday night.

  • Rosenzweig, who had been limited to just two goals in her first six games, registered her first multi-goal output of the season with her two goals against Team Apuzzo.

  • Rosenzweig also posted her fifth career game with 10 or more draw controls after collecting 12 draw controls on Thursday night … She has posted five of the nine instances with 10 or more draw controls in league history.

  • Waters fashioned 10 or more saves for the 12th time in her AU Pro Lacrosse career, sharing third place on the league’s all-time chart with Britt Read.

  • Kent has tallied a goal in five consecutive games after scoring twice against Team Apuzzo on Thursday night … It also marked her third multi-goal effort of the campaign.
