Recap: Geiersbach's Late Goals Guide Team Apuzzo to 12-9 Victory Against Team Read

SPARKS, Md. — Attacker Sam Geiersbach scored twice in the last five minutes of regulation to lift Team Apuzzo to a 12-9 win over Team Read in the first game of Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse action at USA Lacrosse Headquarters on Saturday evening.

Team Apuzzo moves to 2-0 in Week Two, while Team Read falls to 0-2 with one day of play left in the week.

Attacker Sam Apuzzo was awarded MVP 1 honors and 184 leaderboard points following her three-point performance that included the 100th goal of her AU Pro Lacrosse career. Apuzzo’s teammate Geiersbach registered 146 points towards the standings and claimed MVP 2 accolades after scoring a pair of goals to go with two caused turnovers.

Midfielder Ally Mastroianni captured MVP 3 laurels and 90 leaderboard points with one goal and seven draw controls for Team Read in the defeat.

Goalkeeper Kady Glynn made nine saves in the cage for Team Apuzzo, including a stop on a shot with four minutes left in regulation to preserve a tie game.

Rookie attacker Izzy Scane led Team Apuzzo with three goals, while five players finished with at least two goals and rookie defender Emily Nalls also found the back of the cage in the win. Rookie attacker Madison Ahern contributed three assists in the win.

For Team Read, rookie attacker Erin Coykendall and rookie midfielder Megan Kinna each had two goals in the loss.

Six total players scored a goal for Team Read in the defeat.

KEY MOMENT

Team Apuzzo led the contest, 8-6, after the first three quarters, but a pair of goals from Team Read in the early minutes of the fourth tied the game at 8-8. Each side traded scores to bring the score to 9-9 with 6:17 left in the fourth. The goal from rookie attacker Isabella Peterson was originally ruled a two-point goal, which gave Team Read a 10-9 advantage, but was challenged and overturned to a one-point marker. Team Apuzzo scored the game’s next three goals, including back-to-back goals by Geiersbach, and held on for a 12-9 victory.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Apuzzo stands atop the leaderboard with 771 points after adding her 184 points from the game, while Nalls jumps into second in the standings with 635 points. Scane’s 127 leaderboard points were enough to move her into third place with 599 points on the season.

  • Teams are now 4-for-9 in captain’s challenges … Team Apuzzo initiated a challenge with 6:17 remaining in the fourth quarter after a two-point goal by Peterson … The play was overturned and ruled a one-point goal.

  • Apuzzo registered her 100th career Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse goal with her marker with 1:38 left in the first quarter … She is the first player in league history to reach the 100-career goal plateau.

  • Apuzzo also extended her AU Pro Lacrosse point streak to 44 consecutive games … She has registered at least one point in every game of her four-year career.

  • In addition, with three points in the game, Apuzzo brings her AU Pro Lacrosse total to 149 points … She is the career leader in the category and looks to become the first player in league history to reach 150 points.

  • Rookie midfielder Cassidy Weeks scored twice in the first half to record her second muli-goal game of her Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse career.

  • Kinna registered her second career two-point goal in as many games … She scored the two-point marker with 4:30 left in the third quarter and notched her first career two-point goal Thursday night in the first quarter against Team Moreno.

  • Nalls scored her first AU Pro Lacrosse goal at the 7:17 mark of the fourth quarter.

  • Scane finished with the third hat trick of her professional career … She has scored three or more goals in three of her last four games.

  • Ahern contributed three assists in Team Apuzzo’s victory … She has multiple assists in three of the first five games of her AU Pro Lacrosse career.

  • Geiersbach earned Game MVP accolades for just the second time in her AU Pro Lacrosse career with MVP 2 honors … This is her first time garnering MVP 2 after previously claiming MVP 3 honors in her only other Game MVP selection.

  • Apuzzo gained at least 150 leaderboard points for the 22nd time in her 44 career games after earning 184 points towards the standings in the victory.
