Recap: Early Surge Allows Team Palacios to Prevail Over Team Kilfoyl

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Corner infielder Sam Fischer recorded two hits and drove in four runs as Team Palacios opened Week Four of the 2024 Athletes Unlimited Pro Softball Championship Season with an 8-5 victory over Team Kilfoyl at Parkway Bank Sports Complex on Friday evening.

Fischer, who tallied 200 or more leaderboard points for the fifth time in her Championship Season career, garnered MVP 1 laurels and a season-high 220 leaderboard points after belting a three-run home run in addition to a RBI single in the fifth inning.

Outfielder Megan Wiggins followed with MVP 2 accolades, earning 160 leaderboard points after driving in the eventual game-winning run in the fifth inning with a single to center field.

Outfielder Aliyah Andrews, who was named as the game’s Defensive MVP, contributed two hits for Team Palacios with a run scored.

Pitcher Taylor McQuillin moved her record to 4-3 after giving up three runs on eight hits over 3.0 innings in relief. Rookie Valerie Cagle secured her second save of the campaign after closing out the game with a scoreless seventh inning.

Middle infielder Skylar Wallace, the game’s MVP 3 honoree, paced Team Kilfoyl in the loss by going 3-for-4 with a home run in addition to two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Hope Trautwein (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing five unearned runs on five hits over 3.1 innings.

KEY MOMENT

After Team Kilfoyl opened the game with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, Team Palacios struck for five runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-2 lead it did not relinquish. Catcher Sashel Palacios was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the first run before a fielder’s choice by middle infielder Anissa Urtez evened the score at 2-all. Fischer followed with her first home run of the season, a three-run shot to left center field, to give Team Palacios the three-run advantage.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Palacios climbed into the top spot on the leaderboard with 1,174 points following her 118-point performance. Wallace, meanwhile, rose into fourth place after collecting 100 points in the loss, marking her seventh game with 100 or more leaderboard points this season.

GAME NOTES

  • Team Kilfoyl initiated a captain’s challenge on an out call during a fielder’s choice by corner infielder Baylee Klingler with two outs in the top of the fourth inning … The challenge was unsuccessful after the call was upheld … Teams are now 2-for-19 in captain’s challenges through 19 games this season.

  • Palacios, who ran her record to 4-0 as a captain this season, has won six consecutive games and owns a 9-1 record through 10 games this season.

  • Palacios’ teams have outscored opponents by a 30-16 margin over four games, including a 21-12 count in the last two outings.

  • Middle infielder Aubrey Leach upped her hitting streak to seven games after reaching on an infield single in the bottom of the second inning … The former Tennessee standout has accumulated 10 of her 12 hits during the seven-game run.

  • Wallace produced the first three-hit outing of her professional career after striking for three hits against Team Palacios on Friday night … The former Florida product has registered a multi-hit effort in four of her last six contests.

  • Klingler has notched four consecutive multi-hit affairs after going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in against Team Palacios on Friday night … She has nine hits in her last four games after opening the season with a 2-for-14 effort in the first five contests.

  • Corner infielder Nadia Taylor snapped an 0-for-16 skid with a single in the top of the fifth inning … It was Taylor’s first hit since July 27 against Team Svekis.
