Recap: Team Cooper ends Week 3 undefeated with 72-62 victory

MADISON, Wisconsin — The trio of outside hitters Reagan Cooper, Dani Drews and Brooke Nuneviller combined for 38 kills and 25 digs to guide Team Cooper to a 72-62 victory against Team Thompson to complete Sunday’s AU Pro Volleyball Championship doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center.

KEY MOMENT

Team Cooper opened up a 25-17 lead in the opening set, but Team Thompson narrowed the deficit with a 25-22 count in the middle frame. Team Cooper held on for a 25-20 third set win to clinch the match.

LEADERBOARD UPDATE

Opposite Jordan Thompson remains in the top spot on the leaderboard and will guide the Gold team for a third straight week, while Cooper stays in the Orange team captain’s chair with 2,203 points. Drews jumped into third place with 1,987 points and libero Morgan Hentz moved into fourth place with 1,928 points.

TEAM COOPER NOTES

  • Captain Reagan Cooper became the fifth captain in AU Pro Volleyball Championship history to record a perfect 3-0 record in their inaugural stint as a team leader, including the second captain this season … Opposite Jordan Thompson also opened her captain’s career with three straight wins during Week Two.
  • Cooper earned her fifth Match MVP citation this season after collecting MVP 1 plaudits and 303 leaderboard points … She joins Thompson and outside hitter Dani Drews as the only players in the league with five or more Match MVP awards this season.
  • With her 16 kills against Team Thompson on Sunday night, Cooper has now racked up 10 or more kills in seven consecutive matches.
  • Cooper surpassed 300 leaderboard points in a match for the second time this season following her 303-point performance on Sunday … She accumulated a season-high 326 points to open Week Two against Team Valentin-Anderson.
  • Drews became just the third player in AU Pro Volleyball Championship history to reach 500 career kills after downing 11 kills on Sunday night … Drews closed Week Three with 509 career kills across three Athletes Unlimited seasons.
  • Drews added 13 digs for her 15th career double-double, including her fourth double-double this season.
  • Drews, who garnered MVP 2 distinction in Sunday’s victory, moved into a tie for fourth place on the league’s all-time Match MVP award list after collecting her 18th career honor … She also ranks second in the league with six Match MVP awards this season.
  • Outside hitter Brooke Nuneviller narrowly missed a double-double after finishing with 11 kills and nine digs in Sunday’s victory to claim MVP 3 honors … She has registered at least 10 kills in 25 career matches, including three outings this season.
  • Nuneviller also became the 12th player in league history to claim 10 or more career Match MVP honors after receiving her third award this season.
  • With Team Cooper’s 25-17 victory in the first set on Sunday, libero Morgan Hentz joined outside hitter Bethania De La Cruz-Mejía and middle blocker Molly McCage as the only players in AU Pro Volleyball Championship history with 100 or more career set wins … Hentz upped her career total to 101 set victories after Team Cooper claimed the third set.
  • Hentz also extended her streak of consecutive double-digit dig performances to 24 matches after registering a match-high 16 digs on Sunday night.
  • Hentz also became the first player in league history to register 800 career digs, closing Week Three with 803 digs over four seasons.
  • Setter Marlie Monserez dished out 36 assists in Sunday’s victory, giving her 30 or more assists in eight career matches, including her fourth outing this season … She also won her seventh consecutive contest after beginning the season with back-to-back losses.
  • Middle blocker Elise Goetzinger has won six consecutive matches after opening the season with a 1-2 mark in Week One.
  • Coach Joe Trinsey authored his second 3-0 week this season after guiding Team Hentz to an undefeated record during Week One in Omaha … He holds a 7-2 record this season through the first three weekly segments while running his career record to 33-21.

TEAM THOMPSON NOTES

  • Captain Jordan Thompson saw her personal eight-match win streak come to a close with Sunday’s loss against Team Cooper … It also ended her five-match win streak as a team captain.
  • Thompson has fashioned nine consecutive double-digit kill performances after leading all players with 21 kills on Sunday night … It also marked her league-record fifth match with 20 or more kills this season.
  • Thompson, who has also surpassed 15 kills in 8-of-9 outings this season, has tied the AU Pro Volleyball Championship career record with her fifth 20-kill effort … Outside hitter Bethania De La Cruz-Mejía established the mark with five 20-kill outings in her first three seasons.
  • With 60 kills in three matches during Week Three, Thompson becomes the first player in league history to record multiple weeks with 60 or more kills … It is also the third time a player has surpassed the 60-kill mark for a single week.
    • De La Cruz-Mejía holds the all-time record with 61 kills in three matches during the opening week of the 2022 season.
  • Thompson also became the first player in the league’s five-year history to record 50 or more kills in three consecutive weeks … Her three career weeks of 50 or more kills tie De La Cruz-Mejía for the most in league history.
  • Thompson was held to a season-low 147 leaderboard points in Sunday’s loss, ending a streak of eight consecutive matches with 200 or more points.
  • Outside hitter Madi Kingdon Rishel narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs … She finished with 10 or more digs for the seventh time in her career, including the third instance this year.
  • Setter Sydney Hilley authored the 10th double-double of her AU Pro Volleyball Championship career, including her third double-double this season, after tallying 32 assists and 11 digs against Team Cooper … She has now surpassed 30 assists in 29 career matches, the second-highest total in league history.
  • Libero Justine Wong-Orantes finished with double-digit digs for the fourth time this season, including all three matches during Week Three, after finishing with 12 digs on Sunday night.
  • Opposite Tessa Grubbs suffered her first loss of the season, ending her personal eight-match win streak … Grubbs and Thompson entered Sunday’s Week Three finale as the only players without a loss.
