Recap: Sims powers Gold Rush to 95-88 win with balanced team effort

NASHVILLE — Guard Odyssey Sims headlined five players in double figures with a game-high 18 points to lead Gold Rush to a 95-88 victory against Eclipse in Athletes Unlimited Pro Basketball action on Wednesday night at Nashville Municipal Auditorium.

Sims, who scored 13 of her 18 points in the first half, made 7-of-13 shots from the floor and dished out a game-high six assists to claim MVP 1 honors and 620 leaderboard points.

Forward Aneesah Morrow, the game’s MVP 2 selection, narrowly missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds while adding three assists, one block and one steal. Guard Kierstan Bell completed the Game MVP sweep after dropping 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting in an MVP 3 showing.

Guard Bree Hall added 15 points in 23 minutes off the bench, while guard Te-Hina Paopao completed the double-digit scorers with 10 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Forward NaLyssa Smith led Eclipse in the loss by registering a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds, while forward Alysha Clark added 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 effort from three-point range.

Guard Kia Nurse tallied a team-high 17 points, while guard Shey Peddy added 12 points in her debut as a captain.

KEY MOMENT

Leading by a slim 40-39 margin with 22.5 seconds left in the first half, Gold Rush pulled away after going on a 14-4 run to take a 60-47 advantage on a three-pointer by guard Lexie Brown with 3:54 remaining in the third quarter. Eclipse closed to within 72-66 early in the fourth quarter, but was unable to get any closer.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Sims surged into the top spot on the leaderboard with 3,449 total points after posting her fifth game with 500 or more leaderboard points this season. Morrow, meanwhile, rose six spots into sixth place with 2,770 points.

GOLD RUSH NOTES

  • Gold Rush outscored Eclipse by a 27-23 margin in the third quarter to secure 120 win points after the teams battled to a 23-23 tie in the second frame … It marked the third rollover quarter through 14 games this season.
  • Gold Rush converted all 15 of its free throw attempts against Eclipse on Wednesday, marking the fifth time in league history a team has gone perfect at the foul line with 15 or more attempts.
  • Guard Odyssey Sims, who made her season debut as a captain, upped her career record to 20-20 as a team leader.
  • Sims also extended her streak to 31 consecutive games with 10 or more points after scoring 13 points in the first half … She has now scored 10 or more points in 59-of-61 career outings.
  • Sims also ran her streak of consecutive Game MVP awards to six games after claiming the 33rd Game MVP honor of her AU Pro Basketball career … It is also the 11th time she has collected MVP 1 plaudits in her career, which stands as a league record.
  • Guard Kierstan Bell scored in double figures for the sixth time this season, including the fifth game in a row.
  • Bell also improved to 7-0 this season and stands as the only player in the league without a loss … She has won eight consecutive games dating back to last season, which is tied for the second-longest streak in league history.
  • Forward Aneesah Morrow has recorded double-digit scoring efforts in 6-of-7 games this season after finishing with 16 points on Wednesday night.
  • Guard Bree Hall secured her third straight double-figure scoring output after finishing with 15 points … She has registered 10 or more points in 5-of-7 games this year.
  • Guard Te-Hina Paopao authored her second straight double-figure scoring effort after scoring 10 points on Wednesday night.
  • Center Alaina Coates, who scored just seven points in her first five games, tallied a season-high nine points in the win over Eclipse.
