Mira Shane Steps Away From Field, Toward Cultivating DEIB Conversation
Shane served on the Lacrosse Player Executive Committee as Co-Chaiperson for three seasons, alongside Lindsey McKone and Amber McKenzie. She was recently named the recipient of the 2023 Athletes Unlimited Civic Leadership Award presented by EY and was selected as Teammate of the Year by players last season.
“I am extremely honored and emotional to have co-chaired the PEC and play three seasons with beautiful individuals. Since I was small, the creator’s game has had a chunk of my heart and time so playing alongside the lacrosse world’s toughest competitors was beyond a privilege. I’m so thankful to have shared the field year after year” Shane said.
“The AU staff and our co-founders are unmatched when it comes to persistently striving to listen to athletes, innovate the game, and prioritize equity within sport which is why I can’t truly step away but continue to add to the momentum. I’ll be working with all four AU leagues to train athletes on diversity and inclusion with the hopes of building conversation around lived experience and vulnerability in sport and shared experience.”
Shane joined AU Pro Lacrosse in 2021 during its inaugural season. Shane highlighted the need for education and advocacy amongst athletes, including the disparities within Black healthcare, reproductive care, and transgender and nonbinary rights. She is a founding member of Athletes Unlimited’s Intersectional Equity Working Group, which seeks to promote intersectional equity and highlight diverse voices and perspectives within AU communities.
Shane spoke at TEDx on themes related to the intersectionality of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, and sport. She works at Justworks in the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging space, and this year started Miracle Consulting to facilitate trainings that inject positive energy into topics like inclusive practices, anti-discrimination, and storytelling.
