Elise Goetzinger, Pornpun Guedpard Unite with The Trevor Project in AU Pro Volleyball Debuts
At the end of every season, Athletes Unlimited, powered by Give Lively and the Give Lively Foundation, makes a grant equal to 100% of each athlete’s end-of-season win bonus to a non-profit of their choice as part of the Athlete Causes program.
In honor of National Coming Out Day, we’re highlighting a cause chosen by two Athletes Unlimited Pro Volleyball players this fall. Elise Goetzinger and Pornpun “Chompoo” Guedpard chose to support The Trevor Project, the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ young people.
The Trevor Project provides 24/7 crisis counseling and a safe, affirming space for LGBTQ+ youth to connect with trained professionals who understand their experiences. Beyond direct support, the organization advocates for inclusive laws and policies, educates allies and educators on the needs of LGBTQ+ young people, and conducts groundbreaking research that informs better care, protection, and understanding for LGBTQ+ youth around the world.
Guedpard, who hails from Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, is playing in her first AU season, and chose The Trevor Project in honor of her close friends. She originally shared her reflection in Thai:
“จริงๆแล้วในการเลือกโครงการนี้ ฉันไม่ได้เป็นเมมเบอร์ของกลุ่มนี้ แต่เพียงฉันมีกลุ่มเพื่อนๆ ที่น่ารักของฉัน ที่เป็น LGBTQ ค่อนข้างเยอะมากๆ และฉันก็รู้สึกว่า พวกเค้าน่ารักกันมาก และพวกเค้ายังทำให้โลกรอบๆกายฉันมีสีสันมากขึ้น ฉันอดทนเห็นความเสียใจบนความสวยงามนี้ไม่ได้เลย ทุกๆครั้งที่คนเหล่านี้เสียใจ เค้าเสียใจการความรัก ไม่ว่าจะเป็นความสัมพันธ์ครอบครัว , เพื่อน ,คนสนิท หรือแม้กระทั่งเพื่อนร่วมงาน พวกเค้าเหล่านี้เสียใจมากๆ ในทุกๆความสัมพันธ์ เพราะพวกเค้าแสดงออกมาจากความรู้สึกจริงๆ จากใจ นั้นคือสิ่งที่บอกคราวๆว่า ฉันอยากให้พวกเค้ามีความรัก และ ได้รับโอกาสมากๆในสังคม ฉันไม่ได้เพียฃแค่พูดในอเมริกา แต่กำลังพูดถึงความหลากหลายทางเพศของทั่วทุกมุมโลก ซึ่งจะเห็นได้ว่าบางพื้นที่ก็ยัฃไม่ได้มีการสนับสนุน หรือให้โอกาส คนกลุ่มนี้มากพอ ดังนั่น ฉันคิดว่า โลกไม่เพียงแต่สวยงามเพราะมีพวกเค้า แต่โลกยังคงสวยงามเพื่อรอพวกเค้าเติบโต และให้โอกาสพวกเค้าเหล่านี้เสมอ”
“I myself am not a member of the LGBTQ community, but I chose this cause because I have many wonderful friends who are, and I’ve always felt that they’re such lovely people. They make the world around me more colorful, and I can’t stand seeing sadness in something so beautiful.
Every time they get hurt—whether it’s in love, family, friendship, or even at work—they feel it deeply, because everything they express comes sincerely from the heart. That’s what makes me want them to have love and to be given more opportunities in society.
I’m not only talking about America, but about inclusivity all over the world. In many places, people in this community still don’t receive enough support or opportunity.
That’s why I believe the world isn’t just beautiful because they exist—it can be more beautiful by continuing to grow with them, because it has room to give them the opportunities they deserve.”
Goetzinger, who also made her AU debut this fall, shared a message of encouragement on a day that’s especially close to her heart.
“Happy National Coming Out Day! Whether you’re out and proud, keeping it private, or somewhere in between—you are so deeply loved. There is space for you in this world and please take that space unapologetically.
Whether or not someone plans to come out is for them to decide. As someone in their circle, the best thing you can do is show support and make them feel unconditionally loved. This world can be cruel enough—why spread hate towards who someone wants to love? Today, or any day, there is one of the most welcoming communities waiting with open arms.”
