Athletes Unlimited Stars Step Up for the Planet
This Earth Day, Athletes Unlimited Pro Volleyball players are making an impact beyond the scoreboard — they’re playing for the planet. In AU’s player-driven model, athletes compete not just for points but for their chosen Athlete Cause, with end-of-season win bonuses donated directly to the nonprofit they select.
Environmental advocacy has become a rising focus among AU players, with Athlete Causes ranging from ocean conservation to climate justice. In 2024, three standout volleyball pros continued that legacy, using their platform and their play to push for a more sustainable future.
Molly McCage – 1% for the Planet
Veteran middle blocker Molly McCage played for 1% for the Planet, a nonprofit that connects donors to trusted environmental groups around the world. The organization helps fund work in areas like reforestation, conservation, and climate action. McCage, also a vocal advocate for sustainable fashion, sees her Athlete Cause as a way to support both the planet and the people working to protect it.
Madi Bugg – 1% for the Planet
Madi Bugg also supported 1% for the Planet, backing a global network of environmental organizations that take on issues from clean water to climate change. The nonprofit was founded on the belief that businesses have a responsibility to give back for the resources they use. Bugg used her platform to support the push for long-term sustainability.
Claire Hoffman – Earthjustice
In her first AU season, outside hitter Claire Hoffman made an impact both on the court and through her Athlete Cause. She played for Earthjustice, the nation’s leading nonprofit environmental law organization. For more than 50 years, Earthjustice has used the power of the law to fight for clean air, clean water, and climate justice. By backing the organization, Hoffman supported legal advocacy that protects communities, defends ecosystems, and drives progress on climate.
Environmental Legacy
Since the league’s launch, AU athletes have spotlighted nine different environmental organizations — each tackling urgent issues through science, activism, and innovation:
- 1% for the Planet – A global network funding environmental solutions through everyday giving.
- Union of Concerned Scientists – Advocating for science-based solutions to climate, energy, and environmental threats.
- Amazon Conservation Association – Protecting the biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest through science and partnerships.
- Earthjustice – Using legal action to defend the right to a healthy environment.
- Rising Hearts – An Indigenous-led coalition uplifting racial, social, and environmental justice.
- Surfrider Foundation – Championing clean water, healthy beaches, and coastal access.
- National Marine Sanctuary Foundation – Advocating for U.S. marine sanctuaries and ocean conservation.
- The Ocean Agency – Leveraging creativity, data, and design to protect coral reefs and marine ecosystems.
- Well Beings – Promoting mental health and environmental well-being through storytelling and advocacy.
In addition to empowering athletes to support causes they care about, Athletes Unlimited provides ways for fans to take action as well.
As part of its sustainability efforts, AU launched a gear donation program that benefits both communities and the environment. At volleyball, basketball, and All-Star Cup events, fans are invited to donate gently used sports equipment in exchange for ticket vouchers to future games. The gear is donated to Leveling the Playing Field, a nonprofit that redistributes it to youth in underserved communities. The initiative expands access to sports and keeps usable equipment out of landfills.
AU also partnered with Macher, a company that produces sustainably sourced fan giveaways, to reduce waste from promotional items. During Green Sports Night, fans received a reusable wet-dry zipper pouch made from sustainable materials — a practical and eco-friendly keepsake that reflects the league’s broader environmental mission.
From the leaderboard to the stands, sports can be a powerful driver for change. This Earth Day — and every day — fans and athletes alike can be part of that impact. Whether it’s donating gear, supporting Athlete Causes, or learning more about the nonprofits AU players compete for, there are plenty of ways to get involved and step up for the planet.
