Recap: Team Cooper survives late rally from Team McCage, 65-62

MADISON, Wisconsin — Outside hitter Brooke Nuneviller nearly registered a double-double and outside hitter Reagan Cooper added 12 kills as Team Cooper held off a late comeback bid by Team McCage to claim a 65-62 victory to begin Saturday’s AU Pro Volleyball Championship doubleheader at Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the Alliant Energy Center.

KEY MOMENT

Team Cooper used nine combined kills from Cooper and outside hitter Dani Drews in the opening set to claim a 25-20 verdict. Drews added five more kills in the middle frame as Team Cooper upped its match advantage to 50-37.

LEADERBOARD UPDATE

Cooper remains in second place on the league leaderboard with 1,900 points, while Nuneviller rose six spots into sixth place after her 312-point performance on Saturday.

TEAM MCCAGE NOTES

  • Teams wearing the Purple jersey have dropped four of their last five matches after Team Thompson secured three consecutive victories during Week One.
  • Middle blocker Tori Dixon has recorded three or more blocks in each of her last three matches after recording a season-high four blocks against Team Cooper on Saturday … In her last four matches, Dixon has amassed 12 solo blocks.
  • Dixon claimed MVP 3 accolades on Saturday, becoming the 22nd different player to earn Match MVP notice this season … It also marked the fifth Match MVP citation in her AU Pro Volleyball Championship career.

  • Outside hitter Alexa Gray collected her second match with 10 or more digs this season after ending Saturday’s opener with 10 digs … The first-year AU Pro Volleyball Championship performer also had 10 digs against Team Kingdon Rishel on October 5.
  • Outside hitter Natália Zilio Pereira led Team McCage with 10 kills against Team Cooper, marking the third time she has secured 10 or more kills in a match this season.

  • Team Cooper’s 65-62 victory marked just the fourth time a team has won a match by three points or less this season.
  • Outside hitter Dani Drews authored her 33rd career outing with 10 or more kills after smashing a match-high 13 kills on Saturday afternoon … Drews, who joins opposite Jordan Thompson as the only players to post 10 kills in every match this season, has tallied at least 10 kills in 12 straight outings dating back to last season.
