Recap: Team Eberle pitchers combine for 2-hit shutout of Team Ocasio

ROSEMONT, Ill. — There have been plenty of moments during the first 64 games in Athletes Unlimited Softball Championship Season history. But, Saturday’s nightcap between Team Eberle and Team Ocasio gave us one we have never seen before – a 1-0 verdict.

Infielder Kelsey Harshman’s RBI single drove in the game’s only run and four pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as Team Eberle upped its record to 2-0 with the one-run blanking of Team Ocasio.

The loss dropped Team Ocasio to 0-2 during the opening week with both losses coming by a combined three runs.

Pitcher Carrie Eberle moved into the top of the leaderboard after securing the save, hurling 2.0 innings of relief. She posted one strikeout but did not allow a hit. Teammate Haylie Wagner earned the win in relief with a perfect fifth frame.

Pitcher Danielle O’Toole was credited with the loss after giving up one run on three hits over 3.0 innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Team captain Aleshia Ocasio scattered three hits over 4.0 innings of relief with seven strikeouts.

KEY MOMENT

After designated player Mia Davidson led off the top of the second inning with a single to right field. She moved to second base on a fly out by infielder Sam Fischer before coming around to score on Harshman’s single up the middle.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

The sweep allowed Team Eberle to take control of nine of the top 11 spots on the leaderboard, including the first five in a row. Harshman registered 220 leaderboard points to lead all players, while Eberle followed with 184 points of her own.

GAME NOTES

  • The 1-0 victory marked the first shutout of the 2022 Athletes Unlimited Softball Championship season.

  • Team Ocasio was limited to just two hits in the contest, marking a single-game low through the first four outings.

  • The teams combined to go 12-for-26 in advancement opportunities … In addition, both teams had their leadoff hitter reach base six times.
