Recap: Anissa Urtez secures win for Team Denham with walk-off hit

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Team Denham overcame a two-run deficit by scoring a run in each of its final three trips to the plate, securing a 4-3 victory over Team Rhodes in the first game of Saturday’s Athletes Unlimited Softball doubleheader at Parkway Bank Sports Complex.

Outfielder Morgan Zerkle earned MVP 1 honors in the victory for Team Denham after going 3-for-3 with two singles and a home run. Zerkle secured 230 leaderboard points in the win, including 70 stat points, to lead all players.

Middle infielder Anissa Urtez claimed MVP 2 distinction after driving in Zerkle for the game-winning run. Urtez, who finished with 168 leaderboard points, also fashioned a three-hit performance in the victory with a pair of runs batted in.

Pitcher Peyton St. George completed the MVP trio after throwing 4.0 innings in her first start of the season. The former Duke standout allowed three runs on four hits with a strikeout while compiling 138 leaderboard points.

Middle infielder Aubrey Leach paced Team Rhodes in the loss after going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while outfielder Shannon Rhodes and pitcher Rachel Garcia each added a hit. Garcia also conceded one run on three hits over 4.0 innings with three strikeouts in the circle.

Sydney Littlejohn Watkins (0-1) suffered the loss in the circle after giving up three hits in addition to the game-ending run with a strikeout in 1.0 inning of work.


After battling back to even the score at 3-3, Team Denham secured the comeback victory in the seventh inning. Outfielder Morgan Zerkle hit a one-out single and moved to second base on a walk to outfielder Amanda Lorenz. After Zerkle stole third base, infielder Kelsey Stewart-Hunter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Urtez won the game with a single to the center field wall, bringing home Zerkle with the winning run.


Zerkle moved into the top spot on the leaderboard after her 230-point effort while outfielder Amanda Lorenz and Urtez follow in second and third places, respectively.

  • Team Rhodes and Team Denham also combined to go 12-for-26 in advancement opportunities while the leadoff hitter reached base five times in the game.

  • Rhodes drove in two of her team’s three runs with her single in the fifth inning.
