Marlie Monserez Boosts San Diego Mojo in MLV Week 6 Standings
The San Diego Mojo may have started Week Six of the Major League Volleyball season at the bottom of the league standings, but a crucial upset and a resilient five-set showing may have turned the tides for the young franchise. Leading that charge was setter Marlie Monserez, who proved her ability to shift the energy of matches with timely setter dumps. She reached a season high in kills as the team jumped two spots in the standings.
The Mojo got an early start to the week, hosting the Indy Ignite on Monday. Despite dropping the first set by two points, San Diego bounced back with three straight set wins to take the 3-1 match victory (23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-15).
Monserez led the offense with 44 assists while adding 10 digs and a season-high six kills. Kayla Caffey chipped in with four kills, two blocks, and one ace, while Taylor Sandbothe tallied five kills and one block. McKenna Vicini added five kills and one block.
The Mojo hit the road Thursday to face the Grand Rapids Rise, and although the Rise threatened to extinguish any Mojo momentum, San Diego walked away with a second win on the week. The Mojo dropped the first two sets before rallying to take three in a row for the 3-2 victory (22-25, 16-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-11).
Monserez once again steered the ship with 55 assists–her second highest of the season and just two shy of her season high–along with eight digs and two kills. Caffey improved on her Monday outing with nine kills plus one block, seven digs, and one assist. Sandbothe added four kills, four digs, and an ace.
The Mojo capped a busy three-game week on the road Sunday versus the Ignite and settled for a 2-1 week record after dropping three straight sets (23-25, 22-25, 17-25).
