Mary Lake

Personal: Lake earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting and her graduate degree from BYU. She comes from a volleyball family, as her sister, Melissa, also played at BYU. After her volleyball career, Lake became a certified public accountant and currently works in Utah.

International Experience: Lake was a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team in 2019 and helped lead the team to a first-place finish at the 2020 Women’s National League.

At BYU: Lake was a four-year letter winner at BYU from 2016 to 2019, appearing in 454 sets across 130 matches. She finished her collegiate career with an impressive 1,898 digs and 500 assists, while also contributing 94 service aces. Lake was a three-time AVCA All-America selection, including Second-Team honors in 2018. She also earned three All-America distinctions from Volleyball Magazine, highlighted by a First-Team selection during her junior year. Additionally, she was a three-time First-Team AVCA All-Pacific South performer. Lake's defensive prowess was unmatched, as she earned West Coast Conference (WCC) Defensive Player/Libero of the Year honors for three consecutive years. She was a four-time All-WCC selection, with three of those being First-Team honors, and was recognized as the 2019-20 WCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She holds the title of BYU’s all-time leader in both digs and digs per set, and she occupies the top two spots on the program’s all-time single-season digs record list. In her senior season in 2019, Lake earned Honorable Mention AVCA All-America recognition after playing in 31 matches. She was also named to the Volleyball Magazine All-America Team and the AVCA All-Pacific South Region Team. She was once again honored as the WCC Libero of the Year, finishing the season with 404 digs and 24 service aces. She reached double-digit digs in 27 of 31 matches, with 12 contests featuring at least 15 digs. She recorded 21 digs against UC Santa Clara and tallied 139 assists, including a double-double with 15 digs and 10 assists against Stanford. As a junior in 2018, Lake was named Second-Team AVCA All-America and First-Team Volleyball Magazine All-America. She also claimed WCC Libero of the Year honors and earned AVCA All-Pacific South status. That season, she posted 414 digs, 110 assists, and 15 service aces while helping BYU achieve a 31-2 record and reach the NCAA semifinals. She recorded at least 10 digs in 23 matches, with 11 of those featuring 15 or more digs, including a season-high 26 digs against Marquette. In the NCAA quarterfinals, she tallied 17 digs against Texas. Lake's first All-America recognition came in her sophomore year, earning Honorable Mention status from the AVCA and Second-Team notice from Volleyball Magazine. She was named WCC Libero of the Year for the first time and earned AVCA All-Pacific South honors. That season, she played in all 33 matches, recording 533 digs, 131 assists, and 26 service aces. She helped BYU reach a 30-win season and an NCAA regional final appearance. Lake tallied 20 or more digs in nine matches, including a season-high 25 digs against Utah Valley, and she recorded a double-double with 10 assists and 23 digs against Utah. As a freshman in 2016, Lake played in all 33 matches and was named to the WCC All-Freshman Team while also earning Honorable Mention honors for All-WCC. She set a program single-season record with 547 digs, establishing herself as one of the top liberos in the country.
