Recap: Multi-goal efforts push Team Bosco past Team Moreno 11-5

SPARKS, Md. — A strong first half by Team Bosco allowed the squad to present its first-time captain Abby Bosco with an 11-5 victory over Team Moreno to complete Thursday’s Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse doubleheader at USA Lacrosse Headquarters.

Team Bosco used multi-goal efforts from five different players to secure the verdict, including a two-goal, two-assist outing from attacker Kenzie Kent. Kent, the game’s MVP 1 honoree, surpassed 200 leaderboard points in a game for the first time in her career after ending the night with 206 leaderboard points.

Midfielder Marie McCool also notched two goals with an assist to claim MVP 3 distinction. McCool, who ended the evening with 150 leaderboard points, also tallied three ground balls with two draw controls.

Team Moreno, which lost its weekly opener for just the second time in goalkeeper Taylor Moreno’s six weeks as a captain, was paced by three goals from midfielder Ally Kennedy. Kennedy received MVP 2 honors after recording three ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls in addition to her hat trick, which added up to 88 leaderboard points.

Moreno made seven saves in the loss for Team Moreno.

KEY MOMENT

Team Bosco sprinted to a 6-2 lead in the game’s first 18 minutes as McCool and Sammy Jo Tracy each tallied a pair of goals. Team Moreno closed the gap to 7-4 with 3:02 remaining in the third quarter on a goal by attacker Charlotte North, but Team Bosco netted four of the last five markers to seal the victory.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Kent’s career-high 206 leaderboard points moved her into seventh place in the league standings, while Bosco holds third place after jumping over goalkeeper Kady Glynn after her 147-point performance in Thursday’s victory. Moreno remains the league leader, but saw her advantage over attacker Sam Apuzzo shrink to just 13 points.

GAME NOTES

  • Team Moreno and Team Bosco combined to dish out 10 assists in Thursday’s nightcap, raising the league’s season total to 96 through 14 games … Aspiration is committed to planting 10 trees for every assist this season as part of its ‘Aspiration Assists’ initiative.

  • Team Bosco secured the 16th win points sweep in Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse history, including the sixth sweep this season … In addition, this marks the first time in Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse history that both games in a single day have featured a sweep of the win points after Team Apuzzo downed Team Glynn in the opener by a 13-6 count.

  • Team Bosco challenged a goal by defender Caroline Wakefield with 5:08 remaining in the first quarter, which was successful … The goal was disallowed as Wakefield entered the goal circle.

  • Team Bosco outshot Team Moreno by a 36-20 margin, including a commanding 17-7 count in the first half … Team Bosco also held an 11-9 edge in draw controls.

  • Kent, who earned Game MVP accolades for the 12th time in her Athletes Unlimited career, also notched her 19th career multi-goal game, which ranks second in league history.

  • Kennedy registered the 14th multi-goal game of her Athletes Unlimited career, including her fifth career hat trick.

  • McCool, meanwhile, authored her 18th career multi-goal effort, which ranks third in league history behind Kent and Apuzzo.

  • Tracy secured the seventh multi-goal game of her Athletes Unlimited career, including her first this season … It is the first time she has scored multiple goals in a game since a two-goal performance against Team Moreno on August 4, 2022.

  • Alex Aust Holman also collected her first multi-goal game this season … It is the sixth multi-goal performance in her Athletes Unlimited career.

  • Midfielder Katie O’Donnell now owns nine career multi-goal games in her Athletes Unlimited career after finishing with two goals in the victory.
