SPARKS, Md. — After playing with goalkeeper Kady Glynn as teammates for the first two weeks of the 2023 Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse season, attacker Sam Apuzzo had to face Glynn as an opponent for the first time this season in the opening game of Thursday’s doubleheader at USA Lacrosse Headquarters.

The knowledge Apuzzo gained from watching Glynn stop the opposition in the first six games was very helpful as her four goals and one assist piloted Team Apuzzo to a convincing 13-6 victory.

Apuzzo, who earned Game MVP honors for the fifth time in seven games this season, collected MVP 1 recognition and 186 leaderboard points after securing her fifth consecutive victory. The former Boston College attacker netted three of her four goals in the opening 20 minutes as Team Apuzzo surged to a six-point lead at the intermission.

Attacker Cortney Fortunato added three goals of her own to claim MVP 2 honors, ending the night with 165 leaderboard points. Defender Lizzie Colson completed the MVP trio after notching six ground balls with three draw controls and a caused turnover en route to 146 points.

Three others – attacker Sam Geiersbach and midfielders Ally Mastroianni and Dempsey Arsenault – each added two goals for Team Apuzzo, while goalkeeper Caylee Waters stopped eight shots in the victory.

Team Glynn was led by a pair of two-goal performances from attackers Kylie Ohlmiller and Livy Rosenzweig while Glynn made 10 saves in the loss.

KEY MOMENT

After falling behind by a 3-2 margin on back-to-back goals from Ohlmiller, Team Apuzzo rattled off seven consecutive goals to take a 9-3 lead with 2:09 remaining in the third quarter. Apuzzo and Fortunato each scored twice during the outburst.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Apuzzo’s 186 leaderboard points allowed her to take over the top spot in the league standings with 1,077 points, a 30-point advantage over goalkeeper Taylor Moreno. Arsenault, meanwhile, vaulted into the No. 4 spot with 770 points, while Colson follows in fifth place with 735 points.
