Athletes Unlimited announced that Amber McKenzie has been elected as the new athlete representative to the Board of Directors.
McKenzie succeeds Cassidy Lichtman, who was the first active athlete to serve on a pro sports league’s board of directors. The seat was voted on by athletes across the organization.
She will serve for a one-year term and joins former United States Tennis Association (USTA) Chairman and President Katrina Adams, Co-Founders Jon Patricof and Jonathan Soros, and Salil Seshadri.
McKenzie is the former co-chairperson of the Lacrosse Player Executive Committee where she helped launch the league in its inaugural season.
“I loved my time as a player with Athletes Unlimited,” McKenzie said. “I am passionate about the mission of the company and believe in all the people who continue to work hard to grow AU as a professional sports league. It is an honor to represent the athletes on the Board of Directors.”
McKenzie competed in both the 2021 and 2022 AU Lacrosse seasons. In the inaugural year, the defender played in all 15 games compiling 854 leaderboard points and recording four outings with 100 or more leaderboard points. In her second AU season, McKenzie appeared in all 12 games and accumulated 883 leaderboard points.
In college, she was a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and a four-time All-American performer at UNC Chapel Hill where she played from 2006-2009. As a senior, she was named the National Defender of the Year and was a member of the 2009 NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team.
Previously as a pro, McKenzie was a member of Team USA, helping them win gold medals at the 2009 and 2013 World Cup events. Her other pro experience includes competing with the Women’s Professional Lacrosse League in 2018 on the New England Command where she served as an assistant coach the following year. The following year, she served as an assistant coach while pregnant with her second child.
She is a mom to two sons, Storm and Bolt.
