Maddie Burns
Biography
Personal: Burns is the daughter of Micheal and Kim Burns. She also played soccer and basketball in high school.
2024 Season: Burns was one of 16 players selected in the Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse College Draft.
At Michigan: Burns was a four-year letter winner at Michigan and started 67 of 70 games for the Wolverines from 2021-24. She accumulated 111 ground balls with 77 caused turnovers during her career. Burns also collected 77 draw controls, including a career-best 49 draws as a junior. She was a First-Team IWLCA All-America honoree during her senior campaign, and a three-time IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region selection, including First-Team status as a senior. Burns earned three USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America commendations, including First-Team distinction following her senior campaign, and was a two-time Inside Lacrosse All-America recipient. In 2024, Burns became the first women’s lacrosse student-athlete in Michigan history to garner Big Ten Conference Defender of the Year honors. She was a three-time First-Team All-Big Ten performer for Coach Hannah Nielsen and a unanimous choice for First-Team All-Big Ten status in 2024 after pacing the Wolverines with 41 ground balls and 29 caused turnovers. Burns scored her first college career goal against Central Michigan on March 9, 2024, and also registered a goal against Eastern Michigan on April 3, 2024. She posted a season-high five caused turnovers in a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal setback against Johns Hopkins and scooped up four ground balls in a game five times as a senior. Burns earned a starting assignment in all 20 games as a junior, paced Michigan with 23 caused turnovers and 34 ground balls, and ranked second on the squad with 49 draw controls. She anchored a Michigan defensive unit that ranked ninth in NCAA Division I in scoring defense (9.28 goals per game) as a sophomore, and started all 18 games, finishing second on the team with 18 caused turnovers. In 2021, Burns opened her college career by starting 9 of 12 games and collected 10 ground balls with seven caused turnovers.
