Biography
Personal: Powers is the daughter of Juan and Cecelia Powers. She has one younger brother. She participated in boxing at an early age. She majored in hospitality business at Michigan State. She was a two-time Associated Press Class B Player of the Year at Detroit Country Day School.
Other Professional Experience: Powers is a ten-year WNBA veteran who has played in 200 career games with 56 starts. She holds a 10.3 career scoring average while contributing 3.4 rebounds per outing. She helped the Washington Mystics win the 2019 WNBA title. Powers earned First-Team WNBA All-Rookie distinction in 2016. She was the No. 5 overall selection by Dallas in the 2016 WNBA Draft. She finished second in Sixth Player of the Year voting in both 2016 and 2019. Powers played 59 games across three seasons with the Wings before being acquired by Washington during the 2018 campaign. She appeared in 45 games with 13 starts for the Mystics from 2018-20 before spending three years with Minnesota. She played for Atlanta during the 2024 season before splitting the 2025 season between Golden State and Indiana. She has also played overseas in South Korea, Turkey, and China.
International Experience: Powers guided Team USA to a Gold medal at the 2015 World University Games. She scored 27 points with nine rebounds in the Gold medal game against Canada. Powers averaged 18.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 51.4 percent from the field during the tournament. She was also named to the USA Select Team in 2016.
At Michigan State: Powers was a three-year starter at Michigan State who earned a starting assignment in 94 of 96 games from 2012-16. She missed her freshman season due to injury. Powers claimed Third-Team All-America distinction by the Associated Press as a senior, in addition to an Honorable Mention nod by the WBCA. She was an Honorable Mention All-America choice by the WBCA and Associated Press as a junior. She is a three-time consensus First-Team All-Big Ten Conference performer who averaged a school-record 18.9 points per game while adding 9.8 rebounds per contest. She was the first player in program history to earn a First-Team All-Big Ten citation as a freshman. Powers also earned a spot on the 2014-15 Big Ten All-Defensive Team. She ranks third in Michigan State history with 1,817 career points. She also stands fourth on the Spartans’ career rebounding chart with 937 rebounds. Powers holds the No. 3 position on the Michigan State career free throws made list with 438 and attempted list with 562. She grabbed 245 career offensive rebounds, which ranks 10th in program history. Powers owns the Michigan State career record with 47 career double-doubles, including a program-best 24 double-doubles during the 2014-15 season. Powers led the Spartans in scoring and rebounding for three straight seasons. She tallied 697 points during her senior season, which is the second-highest mark in program history. She set program single-season marks by making 170 of 217 free throws in 2014-15. She also established the Michigan State single-season rebounding mark with 375 caroms as a junior. She is one of four players in program history to score 40 or more points in a single game after erupting for a career-high 40 points against Minnesota on February 21, 2016. Powers ranked second in the Big Ten by collecting 21.9 points and 12.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore. Powers was the recipient of Michigan State’s George Alderton Female Athlete of the Year award in 2015-16.
