Recap: Team Glynn staves off Team Moreno comeback in 9-8 victory

SPARKS, Md. — Team Glynn built a four-point lead early in the fourth quarter and held off a furious comeback bid by Team Moreno to register a 9-8 victory in the nightcap of Saturday’s Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse doubleheader at USA Lacrosse Headquarters.

The win allowed Team Glynn to even its record at 1-1 while Team Moreno suffered its second consecutive loss.

Team captain Kady Glynn anchored the winning effort for Team Glynn with 11 saves, including five in the second half. The former Loyola Maryland standout also added a ground ball and closed the night with a game-high 175 leaderboard points.

Rookie defender Katie Detwiler claimed MVP 3 honors after helping Team Glynn to the victory with two ground balls and two caused turnovers, giving her 136 leaderboard points.

Attacker Lauren Gilbert scored a team-high three goals to pace the Team Glynn offense, while midfielder Erica Evans chipped in two goals.

Attacker Charlotte North, who was the game’s MVP 2 selection, paced Team Moreno in the loss with a game-high four goals while attacker Scottie Rose Growney contributed two goals. Goalkeeper Taylor Moreno stopped 10 shots in the loss.

KEY MOMENT

Team Glynn led by a 9-5 margin with 6:56 remaining in the fourth quarter before Team Moreno closed the gap to 9-8 with three consecutive goals in a four-minute span. Midfielder Ally Kennedy won a draw control with 29 seconds remaining, giving Team Moreno a chance to tie the game. After a timeout, North’s two-point attempt sailed wide with four seconds left and Team Glynn gained possession to secure the victory.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Glynn moved into third place on the leaderboard with 939 points after her performance on Saturday, while Moreno dropped to second place behind attacker Sam Apuzzo after netting just 58 points in Saturday’s loss.

  • Team Glynn and Team Moreno combined to record seven assists in Saturday’s second contest, upping the league’s season total to 107 assists through 16 games … Aspiration is committed to planting 10 trees for every assist this season as part of its ‘Aspiration Assists’ initiative.

  • Moreno extended her league record with the 15th double-digit save performance of her Athletes Unlimited career … Glynn, meanwhile, authored her ninth career outing with 10 or more saves.
