MESA, Arizona — In each of the first three weeks during the 2023 Athletes Unlimited Volleyball season, outside hitter Claire Chaussee has made a strong statement during her opening match of the week. And while she was unable to guide Team Hilley to a victory over Team Edmond on Friday night, she may have made her biggest opening statement to begin Week Four.

The rookie from Louisville produced a record-setting performance, but it was not enough to counteract the efforts of outside hitters Leah Edmond and Lindsey Vander Weide in Team Edmond’s 73-71 triumph at Legacy Park.

Chaussee, who matched one league record and set another mark, secured her fourth MVP 1 commendation of the season after recording 27 kills with 11 digs en route to earning 347 leaderboard points in the loss.

Edmond, meanwhile, guided her team to the victory and claimed MVP 2 distinction after collecting 16 kills with 11 digs for the 12th double-double of her Athletes Unlimited career, including her league-best seventh occurrence this season. The league leader remained in the top spot after earning 255 leaderboard points.

Vander Weide, who finished with 261 leaderboard points, received her second Match MVP award of the campaign by garnering MVP 3 honors with 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Edmond and Vander Weide combined to notch 11 kills in the opening set as Team Edmond surged to a 25-18 advantage. Team Hilley trimmed the match deficit to 51-46 with a 28-26 victory in the second set, including 10 kills from Chaussee. Despite Team Hilley winning the third set by a 25-22 count, it was not enough to overtake Team Edmond for the match result.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Edmond extended her lead over libero Morgan Hentz to 340 points heading into Saturday’s tilts. Outside hitter Alli Linnehan stands just three points behind Hentz in third place, while Hilley remains in fourth place with a 47-point edge over Chaussee.
