Recap: Dixon, Edmond lead as Team Edmond defeats Team Hilley, 72-60

MESA, Arizona — Team Edmond overcame a three-point deficit after the opening set to collect its second straight win to begin Week Three of the 2023 Athletes Unlimited Volleyball season, a 72-60 victory over Team Hilley to close Sunday’s doubleheader at Legacy Park.

While Team Edmond upped its record to 2-0 on the week, Team Hilley suffered its second loss in a row to drop to 0-2.

Outside hitter Leah Edmond continued her strong start to the season, collecting a match-high 19 kills while adding 10 digs in the victory. Edmond, who holds the top stop on the league’s leaderboard, secured her fifth Match MVP honor of the season with an MVP 1 commendation to close the night with 390 leaderboard points.

Middle blocker Tori Dixon received MVP 2 recognition on the strength of five blocks and four block assists, earning 269 leaderboard points. Setter Natalia Valentin-Anderson rounded out the Match MVP selections with the MVP 3 honor following her 40-assist, 14-dig effort that garnered her 250 leaderboard points.

Outside hitter Brooke Nuneviller paced Team Hilley in the loss with a season-high 19 kills, while libero Kendall White posted 11 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Team Hilley held off a late rally by Team Edmond and used eight kills from Nuneviller to secure the opening set with a 25-22 result. But, Team Edmond answered with a 25-15 triumph in the middle frame to claim a 47-40 advantage in the match. Team Edmond secured the match victory by downing Team Hilley, 25-20, in the third set.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Edmond carries a 205-point lead over libero Morgan Hentz into the weekly finale on Monday night. Team Edmond and Team Hentz square off in a matchup of the two unbeaten teams in Week Three.

MATCH NOTES

  • Team Hilley and Team Edmond combined to record two service aces in the second match of Sunday’s doubleheader, elevating the league’s season total to 86 aces through 16 matches … Aspiration is committed to planting 10 trees for every service ace this season as part of its ‘Aspiration Aces’ initiative.

  • Nuneviller registered her fourth double-digit effort in eight matches this season.

  • Valentin-Anderson extended her Athletes Unlimited Volleyball record with the 15th double-double of her career, including her fourth this season … In addition, she reached 40 assists for the eighth time in her Athletes Unlimited career, which also extends her record.

  • Edmond moved her streak of consecutive matches with 10 or more kills to 13 in a row … Edmond also amassed 300 or more leaderboard points for the ninth time in her Athletes Unlimited career.

  • Edmond also earned the 10th double-double of her Athletes Unlimited career, including her league-high fifth double-double this season … She is the sixth player in league history to collect 10 or more career double-doubles.

  • Dixon registered her second straight outing with five blocks, giving her 18 rejections through eight matches … She is tied for the league lead with middle blocker Kayla Caffey and Edmond.

  • White finished with 11 digs in the loss for Team Hilley, marking her seventh match in a row with 10 or more digs.

  • Outside hitter Yossiana Pressley registered her second double-digit kill performance of the season after chipping in 10 kills for Team Edmond in Sunday’s victory.
