Recap: Nuneviller leads team with 17 kills, holds No. 3 spot on leaderboard

MESA, Arizona — Outside hitter Brooke Nuneviller registered a match-high 17 kills and added 16 digs as Team Nuneviller claimed the final two sets to secure a 70-63 victory over Team Hentz in the penultimate match of the 2023 Athletes Unlimited Volleyball season at Legacy Park on Monday evening.

Team Nuneviller closed the final week of the season with a 2-1 record, while Team Hentz dropped to 0-3.

Nuneviller, who finished with 388 leaderboard points, authored her sixth double-double of the season after receiving MVP 1 honors in her season finale. She finished the season with 10 or more kills in eight consecutive matches.

Middle blocker Jenna Rosenthal followed with the match’s MVP 2 selection after contributing nine kills with two solo blocks and three digs, closing her season with 273 leaderboard points.

Outside hitter Deja McClendon claimed MVP 3 distinction in the loss for Team Hentz with five kills and five digs. Outside hitter Claire Chaussee added a double-double of 13 kills and 14 digs in the setback.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Six kills from Chaussee elevated Team Hentz to a 25-20 victory in the opening set. But, Team Nuneviller answered with a 25-20 verdict of its own in the middle frame, which was sparked by seven kills from Nuneviller and six kills from Bethania De La Cruz.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Nuneviller and libero Morgan Hentz held their spots on the leaderboard, remaining in third and fourth places, respectively. Chaussee, meanwhile, rose to eighth place after ending the season with her fifth double-double of the season in the loss.

MATCH NOTES

  • Team Nuneviller and Team Hentz combined to register eight service aces in the first match of Monday’s doubleheader, elevating the league’s season total to 152 aces through 29 matches … Aspiration is committed to planting 10 trees for every ace this season as part of its ‘Aspiration Aces’ initiative.

  • Hentz completes the season with 32 set victories, establishing a new Athletes Unlimited Volleyball single-season record … She also closed the campaign with 1,880 win points, tying the league single-season standard set by middle blocker Ronika Stone in 2022.

  • Outside hitter Yossiana Pressley closed the season with 10 or more digs in four of her final five matches.

  • Libero Amanda Benson notched her eighth double-digit dig performance of the season after finishing with 11 digs … It also marked the 22nd time she has recorded 10 or more digs in a match, which ranks third on the league’s career list.

  • De La Cruz fashioned her 23rd consecutive match with 10 or more kills after her 10-kill performance in the win over Team Hentz … De La Cruz completes the season as the league’s all-time leader with 590 career kills.

  • Setter Sydney Hilley reached the 30-assist mark for the 13th time in 15 matches this season, which paces the league … In addition, the 13 matches with 30 or more assists tie the league single-season record, which was set by setter Natalia Valentin-Anderson last year.
