Tina Charles Announces Retirement Following 15-Year Professional Career
Tina Charles has officially closed the book on one of the most decorated careers in women’s basketball, announcing her retirement after 15 seasons at the professional level. The three-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA legend closed her career following a strong showing in her first and only Athletes Unlimited Pro Basketball season, where she finished fourth on the leaderboard.
“It was all a dream, that’s the thought that keeps finding me. That, and deep gratitude. God has covered my life in ways. I can’t fully put into words, and by his grace and mercy, I’ve been able to live out something bigger than I ever imagined,” Charles shared in her retirement statement.

Charles made an immediate impact in Athletes Unlimited this winter, totaling 4,875 leaderboard points while ranking second in the league with seven Game MVP honors. She averaged 16.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game across 12 starts, finishing top five in both categories while recording five double-doubles, including multiple 20-point performances and a pair of 600-plus leaderboard point games.
Charles competed overseas in March, playing in China with Henan Phoenix. She averaged 22 points and eight rebounds across a four-game series, helping the team secure the win in her final on-court moments.
“15 years at the professional level in a lifetime of love for this game. I’ve experienced the highest highs and the lowest lows, and I’m thankful for all of it,” she said.
After her selection as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft, Charles built a resume that has made her the league’s career leader in rebounds and field goals made, and placed her at second all-time in scoring with 8,396 points. Charles is an eight-time All-Star, former MVP and Rookie of the Year, and has earned nine All-WNBA selections while leading multiple franchises to playoff appearances over her WNBA career.
Beyond her professional success, Charles also made her mark on the international stage as a three-time Olympic gold medalist with Team USA and a multi-time FIBA World Cup champion.
Her journey began in Queens, New York, where the game first took hold.
“Growing up in Queens, New York, basketball wasn’t just a game, it was a language, a rhythm, it’s survival, it’s expression. It pulled me in early, and I gave myself fully to it. It shaped me into the woman I am today, and for that, I wouldn’t change a thing,” Charles said.

During her time with Athletes Unlimited, Charles played in support of Hopey’s Heart Foundation, which she founded in honor of her late aunt, as her AU Cause, continuing her long-standing commitment to cardiac health awareness and community impact.
“And to my late aunt, Maureen “Hopey” Vaz, through Hopey’s Heart Foundation, thank you to everyone who supported that mission. Together, we’ve placed over 500 AED’s, helped to save a life, and expanded access to life-saving, cardiac health resources, and communities around the world,” she shared.
As she steps away from the game, Charles emphasizes clarity and purpose in her decision.
“At some point, you have to edit your life… I’m at peace with this decision, aligned with what I’m being called to do next,” she said.
“This game gave me everything, and I’ll miss it deeply.”
