Profit Participation Pool

Aligning athletes and investors through shared incentives

Athletes Unlimited has created a system, unprecedented in professional sports, that allows athletes who are playing now to share in the long-term value that they create. Within AU’s dynamic equity investment model, each investor agrees to cap their own financial returns, and any upside beyond that cap is directed to create a public good tied to the company’s work and commercial success – including an athlete Profit Participation pool. Every time athletes compete in a game during an AU season, they receive units in the Profit Participation plan, which allows them to participate in distributions for the next 20 years.

Athletes Unlimited is built around the belief that athlete-led leadership makes professional sports stronger.

Better Decisions, Informed by Athletes

Policies around travel, scheduling, or compensation are more practical because they’re informed by lived athlete experience, not assumptions. That reduces friction and unintended consequences and increases trust.

ENHANCED PLAYER EXPERIENCE

Input on quality-of-life factors, like rest days, housing, and travel, directly improves athlete well-being, which in turn supports performance.

Stronger Athlete Buy-In and Trust

When players help shape the system and share in the long-term value creation, they’re more invested in its success. That translates into higher engagement, better performance, and stronger advocacy for the league.

TRUSTED PARTNERSHIP

Communication is ongoing and transparent, allowing issues to be surfaced and addressed early. All athletes across the league are encouraged to participate in direct conversations with the Player Executive Committees (PEC) and leadership around issues that matter to them and the athlete pool. The PEC is representative of the player body and actively participates in weekly conversations with league leadership.

Sustainable Growth and Lasting Impact

A league that aligns incentives between players and leadership is more adaptable. It can evolve faster, retain talent, and build a stronger connection with fans who value athlete empowerment.

A NEW STANDARD FOR SPORTS LEADERSHIP

This model helps redefine what leadership in sports can look like: more participatory, transparent, and equitable. That can influence other leagues over time.
