Softball will return to the Olympics at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

The sport, which was one of the five recommended by the LA28 Organizing Committee, was approved by the International Olympic Committee at its session in Mumbai, India.

Its addition provides an opportunity for the U.S. Women’s National Team to earn a medal. In five Olympic Games, the U.S. has earned three gold and two silver medals. Most recently, the team fell to Japan in the gold medal game of the 2020 Tokyo games, winning silver.

Softball’s inclusion comes after an eight-year hiatus as it is not part of the 2024 Paris Olympics program. It will be joined by lacrosse, squash, cricket (T20), and flag football.
