Recap: Team Kilfoyl Holds Off Team Corrick in 3-2 Victory

ROSEMONT, Ill. — A go-ahead RBI single by outfielder Claire Davidson in the fourth inning was enough for Team Kilfoyl to claim a 3-2 victory against Team Corrick in the opening game of Saturday’s Athletes Unlimited Pro Softball doubleheader at Parkway Bank Sports Complex.

The victory evens Team Kilfoyl’s Week Five record at 1-1, while Team Corrick drops to 0-2 in the season’s final week.

Pitcher Lexi Kilfoyl entered the circle in the fourth inning and limited Team Corrick to just two hits in 4.0 shutout frames to earn MVP 1 laurels and 218 leaderboard points. She struck out one batter as she picked up her league-leading sixth victory of the summer.

Catcher Kayla Kowalik went 3-for-4 at the plate, including an RBI single in the first inning and a double in the fourth inning, to garner MVP 2 accolades with 190 leaderboard points.

Davidson rounded out the Game MVP sweep for Team Kilfoyl after notching the go-ahead RBI single, receiving MVP 3 honors and 140 points towards the standings.

Corner infielder Baylee Klingler was voted as the game’s Defensive MVP in the win for Team Kilfoyl, while outfielder Sydney McKinney posted two hits with a run scored and a run batted in.

Middle infielder Aubrey Leach had a pair of hits to lead Team Corrick in the loss, while middle infielder Sis Bates belted a two-run homer in the first inning.

Pitcher Georgina Corrick (3-2) was saddled with the loss after tossing 4.0 innings of relief in the circle despite allowing just one run on four hits.

KEY MOMENT

Team Kilfoyl manufactured a run with two outs in the top of the fourth inning to break a 2-all deadlock. Outfielder Caroline Jacobsen reached on a fielder’s choice before coming around to score on Davidson’s RBI single to give Team Kilfoyl a 3-2 advantage it never relinquished.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Kilfoyl rose into third place on the leaderboard with 1,520 points after her 218-point performance on Saturday. The rookie pitcher stands just two points back of pitcher Aleshia Ocasio pending the results of Saturday’s second game between Team Ocasio and Team Lorenz.

GAME NOTES

  • Teams are now 4-for-28 in captain’s challenges through 27 games this season after three challenges were unsuccessful in Saturday’s opener.

  • Team Corrick initiated a captain’s challenge on a safe call in the second inning when pinch runner Sarah Willis advanced to second base … The challenge was unsuccessful after the call was upheld.

  • In addition, Team Kilfoyl requested a captain’s challenge on a fielder’s choice in the top of the fifth inning with Kayla Kowalik being retired at third base … The challenge was unsuccessful after the call was upheld.

  • Team Corrick also asked for a captain’s challenge in the bottom of the fifth inning when outfielder Haylie McCleney was called out at first base … The challenge was unsuccessful after the call was upheld.

  • McKinney has hit safely in five of her last six games after depositing a single down the left field line in the top of the first inning.

  • Bates became the 20th different player to hit a home run this season with her two-run blast in the bottom of the first inning … She has also reached base safely in all 14 games this season.

  • Leach extended her hitting streak to 11 games with a single up the middle in the bottom of the first inning … She has hit safely in 12-of-14 games this season, tying Bates for the most games with a hit in the league this season.

  • Kowalik authored her second three-hit game of the season after going 3-for-4 with two singles and a double … She also collected three hits against Team Palacios on August 16.

  • Outfielder Morgan Zerkle collected 20 leaderboard points in the loss for Team Corrick, moving her AU Pro Softball career total to 9,972 points in eight total seasons … McCleney, meanwhile, posted 10 leaderboard points in the setback, upping her career count to 9,950 points … Zerkle and McCleney are aiming to become the first players in AU Pro Softball history to accumulate 10,000 or more leaderboard points between AUX and Championship Season play.
