Recap: North's Six Points Leads Team Moreno Past Team Read, 12-8

SPARKS, Md. — Attacker Charlotte North registered five goals, including a two-point marker, to lead Team Moreno to a 12-8 victory over Team Read in the Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse Week Two opener at USA Lacrosse Headquarters on Thursday night.

Team Moreno starts off Week Two at 1-0, while Team Read drops to 0-1.

North’s six-point performance earned her MVP 1 honors and 196 leaderboard points, while midfielder Ally Kennedy captured MVP 2 laurels and 168 leaderboard points after scoring two goals with an assist. The former Stony Brook product also tallied two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Goalkeeper Taylor Moreno rounded out the Game MVP sweep for her team after garnering MVP 3 distinction. The University of North Carolina product made 10 saves and picked up a ground ball to earn 132 leaderboard points.

Rookie midfielder Cassidy Spilis scored twice and added three caused turnovers with a pair of ground balls in Team Moreno’s victory, while attacker Livy Rosenzweig finished with a team-high eight draw controls in addition to scoring a goal.

Rookie attacker Isabella Peterson and rookie midfielder Megan Kinna each registered hat tricks in the defeat for Team Read, while attacker Sammy Jo Tracy set a new career high with nine draw controls to go with a goal with an assist.

Goalkeeper Britt Read made nine saves in the loss.

KEY MOMENT

Team Moreno trailed 4-3 at halftime, but came out with back-to-back goals in the third quarter to take a 5-4 lead. Kinna registered a goal for Team Read to level the score at 5-5 with 5:25 left in the third quarter, but Team Moreno mounted a 6-2 scoring run over the final 15 minutes to claim the victory.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Moreno’s 132 leaderboard points lifted her to the top of the standings with 529 points, while North vaulted into second on the leaderboard and stands at 525 points. Kennedy moved up two spots into third place with 516 points.

GAME NOTES

  • Kinna scored her first career two-point goal with 8:20 remaining in the first quarter … She is the 31st player in Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse history to score a two-point goal.

  • Kinna registered the second hat trick of her career and second in as many games … She previously scored a hat trick to close out Week One against Team Moreno.

  • North notched a two-point goal with 4:55 remaining in the opening quarter … The goal was her 14th career two-point marker to set a new AU Pro Lacrosse record … North broke a tie with Nicole Levy.

  • North notched her 17th career hat trick with her three goals in the opening quarter, the second-highest total in AU Pro Lacrosse history … Attacker Sam Apuzzo holds the league’s all-time mark with 19 games of three or more markers.

  • North’s 17 goals through four games are the most by a player to start a season in league history.

  • Peterson notched the second hat trick in her Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse career … She becomes the 28th player in league history to have multiple games with three or more goals.

  • Rosenzweig grabbed eight draw controls to become the second player in AU Pro Lacrosse history with seven or more draw controls in five career games … She joins 2021 Athletes Unlimited Pro Lacrosse champion Taylor Cummings atop the list.

  • Moreno garners Game MVP laurels for the 13th time in her career, which is tied for fourth most in AU Pro Lacrosse’s four-year history.

  • Moreno notched her 22nd career double-digit save performance, extending her league record … She also stands second in league history with 319 career saves, trailing Read’s 342 career stops.

  • Midfielder Ellie Masera was assessed a red card at the 4:17 mark of the first quarter for a dangerous shot.
