Recap: Andie Aldave scores game-winner in final minute against Team Read

SPARKS, Md. — Team Colson overcame a three-point deficit in the first quarter and held off Team Read to claim a 7-6 victory in the opening game of Sunday’s Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse doubleheader at USA Lacrosse Headquarters.

The win allowed Team Colson to finish Week Two with a 1-2 record, while Team Read failed to earn a win in its three games.

Midfielder Marie McCool earned MVP 1 honors after notching a three-goal performance with three draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover. The former North Carolina product paced all players with 182 leaderboard points.

Attacker Andie Aldave followed with MVP 2 recognition after adding three goals, including the game-winning marker with 47 seconds remaining. She also added two draw controls and closed play with 165 leaderboard points.

While McCool and Aldave paced the Team Colson offense, goalkeeper Caylee Waters anchored the defensive effort by making nine saves, including five in the second half. Waters, who also chipped in two ground balls, claimed the MVP 3 award to finish with 159 leaderboard points.

Attacker Izzy McMahon scored twice in the loss for Team Read, while three other players each netted a goal. Goalkeeper Britt Read tallied eight saves in the setback.

KEY MOMENT

With the score tied at 6-all, Aldave converted a feed from attacker Kylie Ohlmiller to give Team Colson a one-point lead with 47 seconds left in the fourth quarter. McCool won the ensuing draw control and helped Team Colson run out the clock to secure the victory.

LEADERBOARD IMPACT

Team Colson’s victory allowed defender Lizzie Colson to rise 14 spots up the leaderboard, putting her in fourth place ahead of the nightcap between Team Apuzzo and Team Moreno. Despite the setback, Read surged ahead six positions and stands fifth in the league standings with 569 leaderboard points.

GAME NOTES

  • Team Colson and Team Read combined to register four assists in Sunday’s first game, elevating the league’s season total to 68 assists through 11 games … Aspiration is committed to planting 10 trees for every assist this season as part of its ‘Aspiration Assists’ initiative.

  • Sunday’s game marked the fifth contest this season decided by a one-point margin.

  • The Blue jersey closed Week Two with an 0-6 record after failing to secure a win for the second week in a row.

  • McCool becomes the eighth different player to garner MVP 1 honors this season … It is the second time this season she has been recognized as a Game MVP after taking home MVP 2 recognition on July 22.

  • Waters notched her first Game MVP award of the campaign with her MVP 3 selection.
